The start of this year’s State Fair of Texas was wet and rainy. The 1st day was sunny but the 2nd day we woke up to rain and it lasted 2 days. You could see people scurrying around trying to keep from getting wet. The worst part was not being able to find a place to walk, without stepping in a big puddle of water. Naturally, it was fun to the kids, but not the parents. Today, it’s a gorgeous day, with sun warming the temps back up to a nice 80 degrees. Everyone will be able to enjoy going to the Fair today, because the rides will be in service, and all the food courts will be open with the new foods introduced this year.

Cooler

Yesterday, I woke up to a cloudy rainy morning, which dropped the temperature at least 20 degrees. It was a very nice comfortable day, that managed to stay that way all day. Today, the sun is out and the temperatures are still in the middle 80′s at 11am, but I realize that with the sun back, will come the heat. It’s been a very hot summer here in Texas, which is usual for this time of year. A cooling rain, sure helps us enjoy things even if it’s for one day.

We Texans don’t gripe much unless it causes a problem, with high winds, bad storms, flooding or tornado’s. Then of course there’s a problem that must be dealt with. Otherwise the rains are mostly welcomed, because we are usually in a drought condition. The spring we have had a nice amount of rain. Yes, we also have had some bad storms. The plants and lawns are thriving, to say the least. It will become a problem, if someone did their yearly fertilizing. The grass and such will be to their knees before they can mow.

Rains Came

The DFW area has experienced rain the last 3 days that was needed and yet can be a problem. A moderate flooding has been warned, with possibilities of it getting worse. We are glad that the weather is producing rain rather than drought, which we have in recent years had.
The flowers and plants will thrive much better with this slow soaking rain. I fear the sun will come out with fierce rays that burn the new growth. One thing has been nice and that is the fact that this rain didn’t come with bad storms, we so often experience here in the Texas area.

El Nino~

I heard on the news the other day that the El Nino~ effect has caused a tropical type of warming and that will make our weather more wet than usual. In recent years we’ve had these types of effects and it was causing a very arid drought. We were on water rations and many of the grasses and plants died as a result. Now, we have more water than we really need or want……where’s the happy medium?

Getting Ready for Spring

It’s time to get ready for the coming spring. Early in the month, turn under clover and other green manure crops in the vegetable garden so that the soil will be ready for planting next month. Even if you haven’t planted a green manure crop, till the garden to expose overwintering insects. If there hasn’t been any rainfall, make sure to water outside plants, especially if there’s freezing weather. They need to be well hydrated.

Water holiday gift plants with care. Check the soil before watering to make sure it is dry and to avoid drowning plants. Allowing these and other houseplants to dry out between watering will help prevent or control fungus gnats.

002
It’s a cold and dreary day here in Texas, and it’s going to get worse the weathermen say. It’s supposed to get down right cold tonight and tomorrow. They say it may well be on into the weekend. So, it’s time to get all the good cooking on the stove and hunker down, till it’s over. I don’t like cold weather, and can’t understand why people settle in the really cold areas of the country? I’d freeze to death in such conditions as some people live in.
